Tribal Population in India
Tribes Odisha: The tribal population is unique in India. The tribals are said to be original inhabitants of India. There are different groups of people and they have various kinds of rituals. Most of the tribals we found in the North East, Southern States and Central Zone of India.
According to the 2011 census, the Scheduled Tribes comprise about 8.6 percent of India’s population. Tribal population in India constitutes over 104 million according to the 2011 census.
In Mizoram, the tribal population constitutes 95 per cent of the total population of the state and Lakshadeep belongs to Scheduled Tribes.
The tribes in India are spread over the length and breadth of the country. There are lot of tribal population we found in the states including, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. India has the second largest tribal population in the world, next only to Africa.
The main tribal people in India are Bhills, Gonds, Meena, Munda, Oraon, Santhala, Ho, Kondh, Bhumij etc.
Scheduled Tribes is used as an official term for Adivasis. They were given Reservation status in the Constitution.
The tribals as a whole are technologically and educationally backward. Most of the tribal communities live in hilly and forest tracts and other remote areas of the country. The tribal communities have developed their own traditional mode of living.
