Odisha should take the lead in creating the national and international roadmap for millets for the coming decade, according to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, as the state prepares to host an international convention on millets on November 10 and 11.

The goal for Odisha should be to serve as a model for other states and nations. To ensure that this conference is a huge success, he urged everyone to lend their full support.

It should be noted that Odisha is the only state to have such a convention on millets. The year 2023 has been designated as the International Millets Year.

The CM announced that this Convention will highlight millet food cultures of tribal communities in Odisha and showcase the trailblazing success stories of our Farmers, Mission Shakti Groups while presiding over an Apex Committee meeting that was attended by the Chief Secretary, Development Commissioner, Secretary to the CM (5T), and other senior officers of various departments.

He continued by saying that millets have long been a staple crop for indigenous farmers. They are a nutrient powerhouse and climate-resilient. This lowly crop is emerging as a hope for our future as climate change emerges as a significant problem of our times, he continued.

He expressed delight over the achievement of the Odisha Millets Mission and said it is extremely pleasing to see that national and international organisations now view its efforts as the greatest model for millets promotion.

For starting the International Convention on Millets, he expressed gratitude to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Empowerment.

According to Mission Shakti Minister Basanti Hembram, this conference would help tribal people’s livelihoods even more.

According to Chief Secretary PK Jena, every effort has been taken to ensure that the convention is a big success.

Arabind Padhy, the principal secretary for agriculture and farmers empowerment, gave a presentation on the convention’s planning.

The subject is “Millets—Ancient Grains for Modern Challenges,” according to the debate. The purpose of the event is to draw attention to Odisha’s tribal groups and millets. The event will draw between 4,000 and 5,000 farmers, women SHG members, and farm-producer organisations.

In addition to Business to Business seminars, roundtables, technical sessions, demonstrations of machinery, packaging technologies, and special workshops for farmers, the convention will also feature a global millets culinary festival, art, and culture.
