Ganjam district’s Budhakhol Temple, located atop picturesque hills near Buguda, has emerged as a major attraction for devotees and tourists alike. Situated just 5 km from Buguda and about 73 km from Berhampur, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the presiding deity of this sacred site.
The shrine, popularly known as Panchu Mahadev, is perched on the hilltop and can be reached either by climbing nearly 1,000 steps or by road. Devotees not only find spiritual solace here but also enjoy the serene natural setting, with a waterfall, lush greenery, and a large pond enhancing the beauty of the temple complex. A landscaped park at the foothill adds to the charm, making it a popular picnic spot.
The Budhakhol hills also hold historical significance. Archaeological remains suggest that the site was once a Buddhist settlement, further enriching its cultural heritage. Apart from the main Shiva shrine, three ancient temples, Jagadiswar Swami, Gangadhareshwar Swami, and Makareswar Swami are located within the premises, adding to its spiritual aura. A towering statue of Lord Hanuman and the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati stand majestically near the hill, welcoming visitors.
The temple comes alive during Maha Shivaratri and Kartika Purnima, when thousands of devotees from across Ganjam throng the sacred hill to offer prayers and celebrate with great fervor. The natural spring and the cascading Budhakhol waterfall nearby make the place equally attractive to nature lovers.
With its blend of divinity, history, and natural beauty, Budhakhol Temple continues to be one of Ganjam’s most treasured destinations, drawing pilgrims and tourists in equal measure.
