Situated in the scenic Koraput district, Duduma Waterfall is one of Odisha’s greatest natural wonders. Situated roughly 70 kilometers from Jeypore and 77 kilometers from Koraput town, the stunning cascade also goes by the name Machkund, which carries profound spiritual and cultural connotations.

Locally known as Matsya Tirtha, the location of the falls was an important pilgrimage site in the past, and tradition remembers that it was visited by Shri Chaitanya himself in the 16th century to propagate the teachings of Vaishnavism. To this day, the echoes of that holy legacy remain present in the air as the water cascades strongly off the Machkund River.

At almost 3,000 feet in elevation above sea level, Duduma is a colossal sight, plunging from a height of around 175 meters (574 feet). This makes it not only one of the highest waterfalls in Odisha, but also one of the biggest in India. The waterfall, with its deafening sound and sprays of mist, is a sight that is at once humbling and captivating. Nestled among thick forests and knobby hills, it creates a breath-taking vision of virgin nature. For those who get close, the music of the falling water is nearly enchanting, rendering tourists as well as locals spellbound.

Aside from its natural beauty, Duduma also plays an important role in the state’s growth. The Machkund River drives a hydroelectric scheme here, and the township around it has increased gradually over time. The Odisha Tourism Department recently installed a selfie point and a Mission Shakti Café, providing tourists comfort and the ideal spot to take photos. These additions, so tastefully made into the surroundings, make visitors’ experiences overall even better.

The enchantment of Duduma is most profound during winter, when the cool breeze and soft sun render it a perfect picnic destination. Families, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike flock to the falls at this time, filling the peaceful valley with life and laughter. For hiking aficionados, the area presents a demanding but worthwhile trail through dense forests and rocky grounds before reaching the grand spectacle of the waterfall in its full fury.

What distinguishes Duduma is not merely its size or altitude, but how it bridges nature, culture, and history. It is a site where myth becomes mixed with landscape, where the spiritual imagery of the past intersects with the adventurous consciousness of the present. For those who crave peace, awe, or contact with history, Duduma Waterfall continues to be a timelessness destination—roaring, majestic, and indelible.
