Parbati Majhi leads Empowerment of Tribal Women
Tribes Odisha: The 30-year-old Parbati Majhi from Baliabadi village in Rairangpur block of Mayurbhanj district, has emerged as the symbol of real women empowerment among the tribal community.
She could not study beyond Class 9 due to penury, but did not give up and took up farming to fulfil her dreams to be self-reliant. She started farming in 2001 with the help of her father and brother. There was no looking back after that.
She did vegetable and mango farming in 2.5 acres of land using modern technology. Parbati got full support from the government authorities. She also started banana tree cultivation. Currently, she earns up to Rs 2 lakh per annum and is determined to earn more in future.
Parbati has received Rs 2 lakh government assistance towards storage under the National Horticulture Mission. She was awarded the ‘Best Woman Farmer’ by ‘Atma’ in 2007-08. She has become an inspiration for the entire tribal community in Odisha.
