Ekalavya Modal Residential Schools
Tribes Odisha: Ekalavya Model Residential School (EMRS) is a Government of India scheme for tribals (Scheduled Tribes) across India.
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has introduced Eklavya Model Residential Schools to provide quality middle and high level education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students in remote areas.
The EMRSs with the capacity of 480 students in each school are set up in the States/UTs under the Article 275(1) of the Constitution of India.
Overall management and monitoring of these schools are under the purview of State Government. However, these schools are visited by the Officers of Ministry of Tribal Affairs on regular basis.
Objectives of EMR Schools
- To provide quality middle and high level education to ST students in remote areas
- To enable them to avail of reservation in high and professional educational courses
- To make physical, mental and socially relevant development of all students
- To access to the best opportunities in education
- To focus differently on the educational support to those in Standards VI to XII
Structure of EMRS
- Admission is through selection with suitable provision for preference to children belonging to tribal groups
- The number of seats for boys and girls is equal
- The State Government is provided sufficient land for the school, play grounds, hostels, residential quarters
- Education is totally free of cost in these schools
- There are three sections per class for the three streams in Science, Commerce & Humanities for Higher Secondary level. The maximum strength of the each section may be 30 students
- The EMRSs may be affiliated either to the State or Central Boards of Secondary Education (CBSE) as desired fit by the State Governments/UT Administration.
