Odisha and Biswakarma Puja: The significance
It is devoted to Lord Biswakarma, the mythical Hindu craftsman and architect.
The important festival of Biswakarma Puja is observed with tremendous fervor and reverence in the Indian state of Odisha. It is devoted to Lord Biswakarma, the mythical Hindu craftsman and architect. On this auspicious day, artists, engineers, and workers are recognized for their talents, artistry, and ingenuity while requesting prayers for success, prosperity, and safety in their respective industries.
On the seventeenth day of the Hindu month of Bhadra, which normally falls in August or September, the festival of Biswakarma Puja is held. This day commemorates Lord Biswakarma’s birth anniversary, per ancient texts. Odisha celebrates this event with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm and dedication due to its long tradition of handicraft and creative heritage.
Biswakarma Puja preparations start in advance. The tools, workplaces, and manufacturing grounds are meticulously cleaned by artisans, craftsmen, and employees. They spruce up their offices with bright motifs, rangolis (decorative patterns formed from colored powders), and flowers to convey a sense of freshness and vibrancy. The atmosphere is energized throughout and displays the commitment and enthusiasm of these talented people.
People get up early on Biswakarma Puja and take a ceremonial bath to purify themselves. They congregate at their workplaces or designated puja locations dressed traditionally. It is customary to install a highly decorated idol or picture of Lord Biswakarma along with incense, flowers, fruits, and other offerings. In order to show their thanks for the abilities and knowledge bestowed upon them, devotees burn lamps and repeat hymns and prayers.
During the puja rituals, special reverence is shown towards tools, machinery, and equipment used by artisans, craftsmen, and workers. These essential instruments of their respective trades are worshipped with devotion and gratitude. The puja is seen as a way to seek blessings for success, prosperity, and safety in their work endeavors.
