Dhanu Jatra: Bargarh Prepares for a Grand Theatrical Transformation
The world’s largest open-air theatre, the legendary Dhanu Jatra, is set to return from December 24 to January 3, bringing with it an eleven-day spectacle that blurs the line between myth and reality.
As winter settles over western Odisha, Bargarh gears up to don its most iconic avatar, Mathura Nagari. The world’s largest open-air theatre, the legendary Dhanu Jatra, is set to return from December 24 to January 3, bringing with it an eleven-day spectacle that blurs the line between myth and reality.
In a crucial meeting chaired by Odia Language, Literature & Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, the state government on Thursday sanctioned Rs 1 crore for this year’s festival, reaffirming its commitment to preserving one of Odisha’s most cherished cultural traditions. Nearly 200 artistes who breathe life into the epic narrative each year will receive honorariums of Rs 10,000, acknowledging their artistry and dedication.
This year’s edition promises to be more immersive and accessible than ever. The Directorate of Odisha Paribar will facilitate live screenings of the festival across the country, allowing Odias and culture enthusiasts everywhere to witness the grandeur unfolding in Bargarh. The town’s major entry points will be adorned with Dhanu Jatra–themed welcome gates, setting the mood long before visitors reach the heart of the celebration.
To ease travel for devotees, tourists and culture lovers, special buses will operate from Bhubaneswar and Puri to Bargarh throughout the festival period. A dedicated website is also in the works, designed to offer everything from event schedules and videos to details on landmarks, accommodation, parking areas, and venue navigation through integrated GPS support.
With lakhs of visitors expected, Minister Suraj has directed officials to ensure seamless coordination. Security measures, fire safety, sanitation, medical services and overall management will be strengthened to guarantee a safe and smooth experience for all.
When the festival begins, Bargarh will once again transform into a living canvas where the story of Lord Krishna unfolds in real time. Streets, market squares, and riverbanks will become vibrant stages where actors step into their mythological roles, and the entire town becomes part of the narrative. It is this immersive, all-encompassing storytelling that makes Dhanu Jatra not just an event, but an emotional and cultural homecoming.
Promising an even grander celebration this year, the Odisha government’s renewed support aims to elevate the festival’s magnificence while keeping its timeless spirit intact. As the countdown begins, Bargarh readies itself to welcome audiences into a world where tradition walks the streets and mythology breathes again.
