A Divine Glow: Jagannath Temple to Shine Brighter with Heritage Illumination
Under the “Heritage Illumination Project”, high-power LED lights will soon cast a gentle radiance over the temple’s centuries-old architecture, allowing its carvings and contours to shimmer against the night sky.
The sacred aura of Puri is set to glow even brighter as the iconic Shree Jagannath Temple prepares for a stunning heritage illumination makeover. Under the “Heritage Illumination Project”, high-power LED lights will soon cast a gentle radiance over the temple’s centuries-old architecture, allowing its carvings and contours to shimmer against the night sky.
This ambitious initiative, jointly undertaken by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is designed to highlight every intricate detail of the temple complex. From the towering main structure to the smaller shrines that surround it, and from the majestic four gates to the bustling stretches of Ananda Bazaar, the project aims to transform the night-time experience for devotees and visitors alike.
In a remarkable visual feat, the illuminated temple will be visible from nearly 10 kilometers away, offering pilgrims a breathtaking first glimpse long before they reach the holy town. The ASI has already prepared a comprehensive Detailed Project Report, and an allocation of Rs 17.12 crore has been sanctioned. The SJTA plans to request the state government to utilise these funds under the ABADHA scheme, which focuses on strengthening heritage infrastructure in Puri.
The proposal received approval in the latest temple management committee meeting, marking a significant step toward turning this vision into reality. The illumination plan spans all key structures of the temple complex, including the Bhog Mandap, Jagmohan, Natamandap, sanctum sanctorum, Meghanada prachira, Ananda Bazaar, Kurumabedha, and the various surrounding temples.
Once completed, the shimmering illumination will not only enhance the temple’s grandeur but also deepen the spiritual atmosphere that draws millions to Puri each year. As the lights come on, the centuries-old monument will stand as a radiant reminder of Odisha’s rich heritage and timeless devotion.
