The air was thick with chants of “Jai Jagannath” as the three towering wooden chariots Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana rolled out of the Shree Jagannath Temple. Painted in vibrant hues and decorated with intricate carvings and traditional motifs, each chariot stood as a living symbol of Odisha’s rich craftsmanship and heritage. The ceremonial sweep of the chariots by the Gajapati Maharaja with a golden broom, known as ‘Chera Pahara’, marked the beginning of the procession, reminding the world of the essential equality between the divine and the devotee.

Thousands of devotees, irrespective of caste, creed, or nationality, united with one purpose: to pull the sacred ropes of the chariots. The 3-kilometre stretch of the Grand Road, or Bada Danda, from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple became a moving ocean of faith. For many, the act of pulling the chariot is not just a tradition but a deeply personal moment of spiritual connection and redemption.
